Community Connections

Your personalized path to community living in
Costa Rica

You Don’t Need More Websites

You Need To Talk To Someone Who’s Been There

Looking for communities in Costa Rica that align with your values, budget, and lifestyle?

I can help.

Costa Rica is home to one of the highest concentrations of intentional communities in the world, from mission-driven communities to emerging regenerative neighborhoods. The trick is finding the right match without wasting months on research or costly visits to communities that aren’t aligned with your vision.

I believe it’s fair to say that I have the most comprehensive list of community projects in the country and have been to more of these locations than just about anyone you can find. If you’d like to broaden your options while narrowing the number you need to research, you’ve come to the right place.

Your Search For Community Connection
Needs More Than Buzzwords & Catchphrases

If you’ve been searching on your own, you already know the pattern. You open a website, then another, then five more. Every one of them uses the same handful of buzzwords (regenerative, conscious, aligned, sustainable), and after an hour of scrolling, you’re not sure you know any more than when you started.

Maybe you’ve already spent real money visiting a place that looked stunning in photos and felt completely wrong once you arrived. Or you’ve heard whispers about a community that sounds like exactly what you’re looking for, except it barely has a website at all and nobody’s responded to your emails or texts.

And even when a website looks promising, it rarely tells you the things that matter most: how decisions actually get made, what the real monthly costs look like beyond the lot purchase, how established a community actually is versus how established its marketing describes it as being, or whether the day-to-day culture is one you’d genuinely thrive in.

You don’t need a longer list. You need a shorter, more targeted one.

Learn The Questions That Matter

“We made our choice and have moved to Costa Rica to build our new home”

– Richard & Inna

While a curated list of aligned projects is valuable in and of itself, taking a strategic approach to community seeking should continue into the vetting process as well.

Nearly every community seeker who comes to me says they’re looking for a place where residents value eco-friendly practices, personal growth, organic food, and connection to the local culture. Those are baseline intentions – beautiful, important, but nearly universal. Having them at the top of your list is great, but it isn’t going to help in your discernment.

Where these projects actually differ is in areas like their governance, how decisions get made, how conflict is handled, their financial structure, and what stage of development they’re in. Those are the factors that determine whether you’ll still be thriving somewhere once the honeymoon phase ends and everyday life sets in.

Most people don’t know to ask about these things until after they’ve already invested time, money, or trust in the wrong place. This is your opportunity to take a more informed approach.

Step 01: Before the Call

The Call

(live, one-to-one)

60-minutes to ask me about Costa Rica living, communities you’ve heard of, or anything else you’d like insider insight on. I’ll have my own follow-up questions from your assessment for us to work through, as well.

Step 03 · Within a Week

The Follow-up Email

I’ll spend the next few days after our call processing my notes, matching your preferences to my database of projects, contacting locations to confirm information, and crafting an email that’ll include the following:

  • 6–12 Personalized Community Recommendations: a shortlist matched to your specific values, budget, and lifestyle, to keep your investigations targeted and efficient
  • A Comprehensive Profile for Every Recommendation: existing member demographics, governance, real monthly costs, development stage, and a long list of other details that actually matter, all in one place, organized for easy comparison
  • An Interactive Map: see exactly where your recommended communities sit relative to each other and other points of reference that are important to you, to help you start planning your trip

The Path Ahead

To help streamline our focus, I’ve asked each community founder to complete a similar questionnaire covering more than 50 data points that I’ll match against your shared preferences. With this, I’ll arrive at our call with a pre-filtered list and a strong foundational understanding to help guide us in refining it.

What You Need is a Guide, Not a Search Engine

“Like the drive down, building and hosting was very exciting, enlightening, confusing, and exhausting.”

Paving the way

Hi, I’m Jason Thomas. I’ve called Costa Rica home since 2009, when my family and I drove our veggie-oil school bus down here from Minnesota. My first ecovillage tour in Costa Rica consisted of 3 months driving around the country, visiting every community project we could find a website for or hear a rumor of. It was exciting, enlightening, confusing, and exhausting.

That was how I earned the wisdom of not trying to go to all the places just because you can. I now recommend, instead, taking the time to thoroughly vet places over a call BEFORE committing to the expense of showing up.

That wasn’t the only wisdom I learned in that search and my years building community since. I’ve made many mistakes. So many that I’ve written a book on the topic, trying to save today’s seekers from the same pitfalls.

Evolving my approach over time

In the end, we bought our own farm and spent the next twelve years founding and running a permaculture education center and land cooperative, hosting hundreds of volunteers, students, interns, and prospective members. Like the drive down, building and hosting was very exciting, enlightening, confusing, and exhausting.

When I left that project in 2022 and was no longer bound to focus on one project so deeply, I founded Regeneration Nation Costa Rica to serve the movement from a broader perspective through a podcast, events, and online education.

Today, I also serve the movement as the program director for Ecovillage Tours here in Costa Rica, personally guiding groups to visit intentional communities, meet founders, and get a firsthand feel for what community living is really like.

Why my recommendations are different

As of today, I’ve personally been to 24 of the more than 30 active communities in my database. They’re no longer just places I’ve researched from a desk. I’ve walked the land and sat with the people building them.

Unlike search engines and AI chatbots, my recommendations don’t depend on who can afford the best SEO. I know these founders personally, and I understand the nuances that make the difference between a community that looks good online and one that’s actually a great fit for you.

A few words from folks I’ve worked with

We were ready for a new way of living, one that’s more sustainable, more harmonious with nature, and more connected to other humans. While I was successful in capitalism, I didn’t feel supported in that society. The calling to something greater than myself, to be part of a community where we share responsibilities and joy, brought me to Jason.

I received kind, active listening and specific, detailed recommendations from an expert who personally knows the communities and understands our needs and skills. I LOVE the community profile sheets — they make it very easy to compare the different options. I put the data into a spreadsheet, and things became very clear. It was very valuable to read the communities’ input in their own words.

Aniko N.

We were determined to leave the USA and move to a community somewhere tropical, and Jason’s direction in selecting and vetting communities made all the difference.

Jason helped us find and evaluate communities we’d be interested in, introduced us to a contact person at each one, planned our 2-week trip, and supported us while we visited. It was exactly what we needed. In the end, we made our choice and have moved to Costa Rica to build our new home. I confidently recommend Jason to help you find your ideal community in Costa Rica.

Richard & Inna

It was really helpful to talk to Jason! He listened attentively to my story and my ideas, gave me a truly bespoke response, directed me to appropriate contacts and useful reading materials, and offered a lot of insight into the community scene in Costa Rica. He even reached out to me later, remembering me when an opportunity came up to get involved in a project that suited my profile!

I feel a lot more equipped now to step into the community movement, with realistic expectations around what to expect of others as well as of myself. And I know there’s always someone I can reach out to if things get confusing or overwhelming.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many communities will you recommend?
Typically 6–12, based on your specific criteria and what’s genuinely available and accepting members. This isn’t a limit. If I find more than 12 to be worth your while, I’ll be happy to include them, but I’d rather provide you with a shorter list of real fits than a long one padded with places that aren’t right for you.
How current is your information?
I maintain active relationships with community founders and keep my database updated through ongoing visits, tours, and conversations year-round.
What if I need help planning my trip once I have my list?
Once you’re ready to go deeper, I also offer Trip Planning to coordinate your visits, In-Country Support while you’re on the ground, and Vetting & Decision-Making Support to help you narrow down your finalists. We can talk through what makes sense on our call.
What if I need help deciding on which community to choose after I've narrowed down my choices?
Once you’ve taken the time to visit your favorite prospects and narrowed the list down to two or three specific communities, if you want help evaluating them in depth, I can offer a Selection Strategy Session to guide you through that phase. Just reach out to me, and I’ll send you more info.
Do you speak Spanish? Will I need to?
Yes, I’m bilingual. I’ll also be honest about how your own Spanish level might shape your integration experience and which communities offer language support if you’re still learning.
I'm not sure I'm ready — I don't even know what I'm looking for yet.
That’s exactly what this call is for. Most people arrive with a wishlist and leave with real criteria. Getting clear is part of the process, not a prerequisite.
What if the community I'm curious about isn't in your database yet?
Mention it on your intake form or bring it up on the call. I likely know it, or know someone who does, and I’ll give you my honest opinion, including if it’s one I’d steer you away from.

“The best time and money I’ve spent on my journey to find our new community.”
